thankful thursdays {16}

12.30.2010

can you believe this is the last thursday in 2010? sheesh.
my christmas season was absolutely wonderful...
filled with family, friends, love, and laughter.
i cannot believe it has already come and gone,
but I'm so thankful for the light and joy this season brings.

well, here we are... my last little list of thankfulness for 2010
silly sister moments
learning how to make chocolate pies with nana
$30 christmas gift exchange
the history of redemption
time for reading, journaling & craftiness
snow!
baking. baking. baking.
cake balls (um... i mean, cake poppers)
a fun get together with good friends
a beautiful christmas eve service
fun family traditions
video chatting with jo/mo on christmas (sure do miss them)
celebrating my beautiful momma's birthday
pulling a little joke on said birthday
making paula dean's buttermilk spice cake for my madre
late night chats
eating lots of yummy food
leaving on a jet plane
lots of lazy days and movie watching
celebrating the birth of my savior
This is Christmas, the real meaning of it: God loving, searching, giving himself to us; man needing, receiving, giving himself to God. Redemption's glorious exchange of gifts, without which we cannot live, without which we cannot give to those we love anything of lasting value. This is the meaning of Christmas, the wonder and the glory of it. - Ruth Bell Graham

Hope your Christmas was filled with lots of blessings!

happy thursday!
as always, here's my little weekly list of thanks

a lovely evening chatting with lovely ladies
a memorable family party
lots of crafting & baking
reading. reading. reading.
being home for the holidays
a frigid (but fun) game of ultimate frisbee
celebrating another finished term with my nursing peeps
a much-needed haircut

a sweet Chinese exchange student who's staying with my fam
a beautiful advent season
and most of all, I am thankful for Jesus...
for the God who chose to come dwell among his people as Emmanuel.

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. {Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:21; Isaiah 9:6 ESV}

... with precious stones

{via}
"For the mountains may move
and the hills disappear,
but even then my faithful love for you will remain.
My covenant of blessing will never be broken,”
says the Lord, who has mercy on you.

“O storm-battered city,
troubled and desolate!
I will rebuild you with precious jewels
and make your foundations from lapis lazuli.
I will make your towers of sparkling rubies,
your gates of shining gems,
and your walls of precious stones."

-Isaiah 54:10-12
my little sister and I were sitting in my car the other night talking about what the "themes" of 2010 have been for us. there are so many different things i could name for this year, but the overarching theme is centered around being rebuilt. if i'm honest, i was (and still am) in desperate need of restoration.

it's no secret that 2009 was a toughie for me in a number of ways. it was an incredible year, but left me broken, with pieces of my life that needed some picking up and reworking. 2010 has been just that, a season of picking up those pieces and rebuilding them into something new. God has been in the process of:
softening my heart, where it had grown hard
restoring truths, that had become ridden with doubt
and revealing weaknesses, where i thought i was strong

though it has been a painful process as times, i am confident that i'm walking out of 2010 a different person than who i was walking in. it has been a season of growth and change and big life lessons, but i could not be more grateful. you see, when God builds back, he does so with precious stones... leaving us much more beautiful and whole than where we were on our own. by no means do i claim to have my life figured out... i've just been reflecting a lot on what God has been up to this year. i'm unspeakably grateful for how he's been changing and shaping this little heart of mine.

what were the themes of 2010 for you?

Nursing School 301.

12.18.2010

do you remember when I wrote about my first year of
nursing school as part of the whirlwind update in may?
{Nursing School 101. + Nursing School 201.}
well, hold on because i'm unpacking my 3rd semester for you today...
(I know I've been writing about it all along, but just humor me here)

a per tradition, here is the stack of textbooks that i've been pouring through over the past 5 months. i had a whopping 7 classes this semester:
Nursing History & Health Policy
Community Health & Home Care Nursing Didactic
Community Health & Home Care Nursing Clinical
Maternity Nursing Didactic
Maternity Nursing Clinical
Pediatric Nursing Didactic
Pediatric Nursing Clinical
It was a busy one, folks... yet amazing in so many ways...

- Pediatric Nursing -
oh, pediatric nursing. i loved it. as you may remember, i was placed on the children's cancer unit at primary childrens hospital here in Salt Lake. i was so nervous about working with kids with cancer, but ended up falling in love with it. Even though parts were incredibly heart breaking, it was also incredibly beautiful to see kids gain victory over terrible diseases. i learned so much about the different dynamics of working with kiddos, it's definitely not as romantic as you might think. i can really see myself working here someday... praying for lots of job openings in may!

highlight: watching an 8-year old cancer survivor ring the bell of hope in celebration of his last chemotherapy treatment. there are no words for what this did to my heart.

- Maternity Nursing -
let's just say that i was happy to survive this one. maternity nursing is just not my thing. out of all of the grotesque things i've seen in school, i've never felt like i was going to pass out until this rotation... that being said, i still cried every time I saw a birth take place. it is one of the most beautiful mysteries in life, and i am so thankful for the amazing maternity nurses out there. i'm just not one of them.

highlight: watching my first in-person delivery, such a crazy mix of emotions, but it was so incredibly beautiful to watch a new little life enter the world.

- Community Health Nursing -
my public health rotation was definitely unique. i was placed with the burn center at the university of utah hospital. i did something different every week, from the outpatient clinic to the ICU and community education to wound care. i pretty much saw the full spectrum of burn care, and let me tell you, it is crazy intense! i think that suffering a serious burn injury is one of the most painful things that i've watched patients go through. i sat in on a burn support group and it was so apparent that the scars were much deeper that what was seen on the outside, there was a huge psychosocial piece to this type of nursing and i really enjoyed that. but hearing people scream out in pain for hours at a time is just too hard on my little heart. i really enjoyed my time here and learned a TON, but i definitely don't see myself going into burn nursing.

highlight: witnessing a man take his first steps after months of rehabilitation post burn injury. He took about 5 steps, then sat down and wept. I sat down with him and cried a few tears too.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
my experiences this semester were broad and full, and i think they grew me a lot, both as a nurse and a person. it's great to know that i'm exactly where i'm supposed to be... for so long i've been frustrated just wanting to be done with school, but this semester i came to a place where i realized that i am here, right now, for a reason that's bigger than simply being finished someday. how 'bout that ladies and gents, by the 5th year of college i finally have some perspective :) haha. really though, what is notoriously known as the hardest semester of nursing school was one of my best. i was still busy, but was rarely stressed and had a lot better balance in my life. i don't quite know how, but i really believe that God gave me his strength and changed my heart towards school. i also think that my little project in cultivating thankfulness has guarded my heart from being consumed by pessimism and bad moods (which is so easy to do when you're in school). overall, this was a stellar semester and i'm so grateful for the things i was able to walk through in it.

thank you, lord, for walking with me through the past 5 months! i would have been consumed without you.

"When somebody is aware of [God's] love, the same love that the Father has for Jesus, that person is just spontaneously grateful. Cries of thankfulness become the dominant characteristic of the interior life, and the by-product of gratitude is joy. We're not joyful and then become grateful; we're grateful and that makes us joyful."
